The composition “Lorbeerbaum” (Laurel Tree) for viola d’amore by CHEN Chengwen is an exploration of the transformation of Daphne, as described by Ovid in his “Metamorphoses.” Daphne’s transformation into a laurel tree while fleeing from Apollo has consequences both for her own inner world and for her external environment. As her scope of movement becomes increasingly restricted, she simultaneously grows into a different body. Tobias Klich’s cinematic interpretation with Annegret Mayer-Lindenberg (viola d’amore) explores this physical sensation.
